5 Signs You're Drinking Stale Coffee (And How to Fix It)
There is nothing quite as tragic as a bad cup of coffee. But often, the problem isn't the brewing method—it's the beans. Coffee is a fresh food product, and it goes stale just like bread or fruit.
Are you drinking stale coffee? Here are the tell-tale signs:
1. No Bloom
When you pour hot water over fresh grounds, they should bubble and rise (the "bloom"). This is CO2 escaping. If your water just sits flat and sinks through the grounds like it's mud... your coffee is stale.
2. Dull Aroma
Open the bag. Does it smell like a bouquet of flowers, chocolate, or fruit? Or does it smell like... cardboard? If the smell doesn't hit you immediately, the flavor won't be there either.
3. Oily Beans
This is tricky. Dark roasts are naturally oily. But if a Light or Medium roast looks super shiny and greasy, it might mean the oils have migrated to the surface and are oxidizing (going rancid).
4. Bitter or Flat Taste
Fresh coffee has acidity, sweetness, and complexity. Stale coffee tastes one-dimensional: just bitter, watery, or "flat."
5. The Best By Date is Next Year
If your bag has an expiry date 12 months from now but no Roast Date, put it back. You want to drink coffee within 2-4 weeks of roasting.
