Mr Dapper’s Guide to Grind Size: Why It Matters
Mr Dapper’s Guide to Grind Size: Why It Matters
You bought fresh beans. You have good water. But your coffee still tastes... off. The culprit? It's almost always the grind size.
Grind size controls how fast water flows through the coffee. Too fine, and it clogs (bitter). Too coarse, and it rushes through (sour).
The Golden Rules of Grinding
- Coarse (Sea Salt): Best for French Press and Cold Brew. These methods steep for a long time, so you need big chunks to prevent over-extraction.
- Medium (Sand): Best for Drip Coffee Makers. The standard setting for most automatic machines.
- Medium-Fine (Table Salt): Best for Pour Over (V60, Chemex). Allows for a steady flow without clogging the paper filter.
- Fine (Powdered Sugar): Best for Espresso. You need high resistance to build pressure.
How to Dial It In
Taste your coffee.
Sour/Watery? Grind finer.
Bitter/Harsh? Grind coarser.
It takes practice, but once you find the sweet spot, your coffee will transform.
