Pour Over 101: A Beginner’s Guide
Pour-over coffee isn't just for hipsters. It’s simply the best way to control every variable of your brew and unlock clear, complex flavors.
What You Need
- Dripper: V60, Kalita Wave, or Chemex.
- Filter: Paper filters (rinse them first!).
- Gooseneck Kettle: Essential for controlling water flow.
- Scale: Precision is key.
The Basic Recipe (1:16 Ratio)
- Weigh: 20g of medium-fine coffee.
- Heat: Water to 200°F (93°C).
- Bloom: Pour 40g of water. Wait 30s. Watch it bubble (degas).
- Pour: Slowly pour the remaining water (total 320g) in concentric circles.
- Enjoy: Total brew time should be around 3:00 minutes.
It takes a little practice, but the result is a clean, bright cup that a machine just can't match.
